(I know - it's been MONTHS!)
The truth is, I don't listen to music very often. In the car (especially on road trips) - yes. However, I do not walk around with earphones in my ears and - does anyone have a stereo anymore? That just seems like such a thing of the past.
Even though I do not listen to music as often as I once did, I do still LOVE music.
So, here are a few of my favorites in no particular order:
- Anything country is romantic or fun (Faith Hill, Tim McGraw, Rascal Flatts, Keith Urban, Reba, Alan Jackson, Garth Brooks, George Straight, Zac Brown Band, etc.)
- Relaxing and/or sweet: Jack Johnson, Cranberries, Enya, Ben Harper, Postal Service, Ingrid Michaelson, India Arie, Corinne Bailey Rae
- Classic (for my lifetime): A-ha, Nirvana, Green Day, Pat Benetar, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Eurythmics
- Other fun "oldies": Frank Sinatra, Doris Day, Hermans Hermits, ABBA,
- Sundays: Mormon Tabernacle Choir, Rebecca Lopez, Jenny Phillips, Hilary Weeks, April Meservy, Amy Gileadi, Jenny Frogley, Mindy Gledhill, Kenneth Cope, Rob Gardner, and Janice Kapp Perry

Day 9-Something you're proud of in the past few days
Lately, I have been doing a lot of arts and crafts and fun meals.
I taught the girls how to make these Modpodge mason jar "Arise & Shine Forth" candle holders for Young Women New Beginnings - the girls made and decorated the cupcakes.
I did make this Big Top cupcake :)
A friend of a friend works at a vegetable warehouse which was going to throw out crates and crates of these bell peppers! We were fortunate to receive a large box with 50 - 100 of these beautiful fruits. Stuffed bell peppers - YUM!
Baklava! Ok, I didn't make it - my best friend did, but I watched and it SO DELICIOUS!
Sunday dinner - my 2nd cousin brought over the fajita meat and tortillas. We cooked it all up - SO GOOD!
Whole wheat pasta with chunky sauce including orange bell peppers :)
One of Iosepa's favorite toys. Cut slit in lid of oatmeal canister. He inserting the jam and salsa lids through the slot, then opens the can, tips it out and begins again.
We thought we'd be festive for Valentine's day - Strawberry Heart Shaped Pancakes for breakfast.
Corn on the cob, heart shaped roasted potatoes, pork chops and steamed carrots for dinner.
Homemade oreos for dessert :)

Day 7-A picture of someone/something that has the biggest impact on you
I do not sleep as long or as well as I used to.
I cannot keep a shirt clean for more than 20 minutes; there always seems to be slobber or a boogie nose or little tears or macaroni and cheese smeared across one shoulder or the other.
Wearing high heels - forget about it! (I'd rather be less fashionable than twist an ankle and drop my baby)
I carry diapers and wipes, treats and books and extra onesies everywhere I go.
My home only stays clean for more than an hour if we are asleep. On occasion I seriously wonder if there are more pots and pans in the living room or more toys in the kitchen cupboards.
Some days adventure means putting on our shoes to get the mail or go in the back yard (our 20'x5' fenced in cement square that holds the a/c unit & one aloe vera plant).
I have awoken from a nap with the baby at 11 in the afternoon to the sound of the FedEx man ringing the doorbell. Upon realizing that I had fallen asleep without ever getting dressed for the day - had to shout through my bedroom window "COMING!" while throwing on something other than a night gown dawned with baby spit up. (:
Becoming a mother has had an incredible impact on me physically, spiritually, socially . . . in every way, really. Lately, I have been truly ENJOYING my son. Not just smiling, but reveling - really soaking in every smile, every giggle, every hug, every footstep, every tear. He is the epitome of sweetness. His enthusiasm and intense curiosity is beautifully inspiring. Dave and I are in awe and humbled that we were able to CREATE this incredible little person. What a beautiful blessing to be apart of! I thank my Father in heaven for that.
When I think of the enormous feeling of love I have for my son, I catch a small glimpse of what my Father in Heaven feels for me and even more so for His son, Jesus Christ. I think about what a Sacrifice it must have been for Christ to die for us - how hard it must have been for Father in Heaven - this testifies to me that the Atonement of Jesus Christ was that important. We are loved so much that Christ gave his life that we might return to live with Him if we repent and Follow Him.

Day 6-Favorite super hero and why
A super hero is someone who goes above and beyond to make miracles happen - my favorite super hero, as cliche' as it may sound, is my mother. She is the epitome of selflessness. Whether it is staying up late to work on a project, spending time and money to make a special gift or trip or just taking time to put her arm around you and tell you she is proud of you. Just a few nights ago, she came up to visit (an hour northwest); she bought me a temporary cell phone to replace my lost phone and while dinner was cooking, ran off to the store to buy a few more stools to add to our apartment and have enough seats for everyone for dinner. She is so thoughtful and kind. She is everything I aspire to be.
Here are a few more reasons why I think she is amazing:
- She taught aerobics while 9 months pregnant
- She is one of the world's BEST story tellers
- She is a good friend and the best person to stay up late and laugh with
- She is the mother to 8 fantastic children (all born naturally w/o epidurals & nursed for 1 yr +) - need I say more?
- She teaches a Scripture Study Course for young adults at UT Brownsville and gives her heart and soul to those kids. I know she has made a tremendous difference in their lives. She is gifted at helping people feel loved and realizing that they are incredible children of God.
- She literally believes you can achieve anything you work to accomplish - this has driven me during seemingly impossible tasks
- Even though growing up I impatiently thought I would die of starvation after 3 hours of church, she almost always made it a point to stop and visit people on the way home, just to say hi and see how they were doing and let them know she cared about them and missed them
- She always puts others first
- She is so creative - sometimes - I think too creative :) Her creativity has always come in handy when completing school projects and such
- She taught me what things matter most: Family and God
My mother would not be complete with out her trusty side-kick, my dad. He also is one of the most selfless people I've ever known. A few weeks ago my husband complimented his vintage BYU sweater and before leaving, my dad literally took the sweater off his back and gave it to Dave. After getting laid-off my father found work supporting our family as a truck driver. Even though he has two college degrees, he has never complained about his job. He simply continues to get back in his truck and drive across the country, happy to be able to support his family.
Although being gone so much would be a seemingly simple way to let him off the hook of his family duties, he is a great father and leader. Through the blessing of cell phones he called and woke me up every morning for seminary. We held family home evening and daily prayer with him over the phone when he could not be there in person. Even in college, he would keep me company while I walked the frozen path to and from work in the frozen tundra known as BYU-Idaho. He sacrifices so much for us; I am eternally grateful and indebted to him.
My grandparents are some of the most hard-working, dedicated people I know. My mother surely inherited her good qualities from these two wonderful people. My grandma is such a committed person; she faithfully reads her scriptures and prays very sincerely. She has volunteered to lead countless choirs, taught numberless piano lessons (for free) and spent hours upon hours working with students who were often labeled less than the cream of the crop. I know my mother received her gift of encouraging people from my grandmother.
My grandfather is over 84 years old and yet he daily works out in his grapefruit orchard, climbs trees with chain saws, cuts down big limbs, hauls heavy loads, takes his tractor apart, finds the problem and re-assembles it. Indeed his muscles are big and strong (like he always jokes), but his greatest strength comes from within. He had an incredible job in his younger years; he was the top sales person in the nation for New York Life. While driving through a reservation on his way home to Utah on a business trip, he discovered a world he never knew existed. He and his wife have since spent their entire life living on Indian reservations, down in Puebla, Mexico, in Columbia and now in Deep South Texas serving Lehi's children and loving every minute of it.
Finally, I am named after my paternal grandmother; she was known as the sweetest woman in all of Fiji. My grandfather was a greatly revered police chief, known for once fending off an entire jail in an outbreak. They were the first Fijian family ever sealed in the New Zealand temple. Out of the kindness of their hearts, they took in all of my dad's uncles and treated them like they were their own children. Although I have never met these two beautiful people, I look forward to that glorious day when I will hug and kiss my sweet grandparents for the first time.
Admiration is too weak a word to express my feelings for these great people who have molded me into what I have become today. They are who I aspire to be. They are my heroes.

Day 5-A picture of somewhere you've been to
Can you guess where this is???
Does this give you a hint?
How bout now?
FIJI! It is more beautiful than it looks :) The people are the most beautiful of all.
My dad is from Fiji. Born and raised. I had the opportunity of visiting after my sophomore year of college. It was an amazing opportunity to visit my family I had never met. I learned so much.

Day 4 - A habit that you wish you didn't have
PROCRASTINATION! I admit . . . I am a procrastinator - the worst
kind, too. I am a perfectionist procrastinator, meaning that I put off
projects and tasks until I have the time, money, resources, etc. to do
whatever amazing things I have planned in my mind.
Hence, the reason I have yet to send out most of my baby shower thank-you's. It is not because I am not grateful, it is because I have wanted to send something more sincere than just a "thanks it's really cute - I'm glad you came" type of note. I want the kind people in my life to know that I am really and truly grateful for their time and effort and money - it seemed silly to write thank-you's before I had even seen my baby.
When the baby came and then I had to go back to teaching and grading papers and working with the children at church . . . it simply did not happen. After moving and taking a hiatus from teaching I thought I would have ALL THE TIME IN THE WORLD - I would be home ALL DAY LONG.
Every stay at home mom knows that simply is not true - plus, unfortunately, the Terrible Two's hit Iosepa early! He keeps me on my feet! From climbing up the book case, emptying all of his clothes and mine from our drawers, pulling all the pots and pans from the cupboards, and leaving me to HUNT for the dustpan for half an hour only to find he'd hidden it in the fridge!!!!! I love this kid. He is a sweet, sweet little boy who gives the best hugs.
So, to make a long story longer, I am committing myself to finish all of my thank-you cards - Expect one by Valentine's Day :) Sometimes you just have to do it - even if it is not as amazing as you had hoped and nearly two years late.

Day 2-The meaning behind your Blog name
"Nuestra Vida" is Spanish for "Our Life." When Dave and I got married, part of our honeymoon was making our way down to the Rio Grande Valley in Deep South Texas. I got a job teaching High School Biology in Rio Grande City. Rio Grande City has a population of about 13,000. There is a movie theatre, a Wal-Mart, another large grocery store and every fast food place you can imagine. That is about it. Our church had only one small congregation - in Spanish - only in Spanish. In fact, this is telling of the city because no matter where you go, most everyone talks in English and Spanish at the same time, only here we don't call that Spanglish; here WE SPEAK TEX-MEX :)
This is OUR BLOG about OUR LIFE, which started out in Rio Grande City :)
Below are a few pictures that describe Rio Grande (please roll the R's when you say it :)

(Picture taken on Sunday, New Year's Day - I am the one in a dress:)
15 Interesting Facts About Myself
- We did not get a good family picture on Christmas day with just our little family so I took advantage of us being dressed up and asked a friend to take one after church on New Year's Day. Because of my passive personality, even though I would have liked her to have taken it again from a different angle, I settled for this and I now have a pole sticking out of my head, but her little girls finally got to go home and eat lunch after our 1 hour + meeting after church.
- My middle name has 19 letters in it: Kauimikimikiokalani. It means "energetic beauty from the heavens." Just imagine how embarrassing it was to tell people that over and over as an adolescent; it always felt so prideful and I always blushed when people would say "Oh, and it is so true."
- I LOVE to give myself and others pedicures; it is therapeutic to me. Ever since I was young, whenever I'd had a stressful day I loved to take a long shower, clean, clip, exfoliate, lotion, oil, buff and paint my nails/ toes. I find it so peaceful. There is nothing better than clean, soft, aesthetically pleasing feet!
- Vanilla is my favorite ice cream flavor - it goes so well with ANY topping (nuts, bananas, mango, cinnamon sugar, brownies, etc.)
- Speaking of toes, my 2nd toe is longer than my big toe. Is that normal?
- It takes a very long time to comb my hair. I usually only comb it in the shower. I use shampoo only 2 or 3 times a week - it took over a year for me to use one bottle of shampoo! It dries my hair so I mostly use conditioner. Speaking of hair, I am seriously considering chopping it off and donating it to Locks of Love. What do you think?
- As you can tell - I'm long winded. I love writing in my journal (and writing in general). This is also therapeutic for me.
- My son, Iosepa, is our pride and joy. The best part of my day is seeing him wake up with a huge smile and the craziest bed head you've ever seen :)
- I love my husband. He is so different from the man I thought I would marry in some ways, but he is my partner, my friend and my love. One of my favorite things to do with him is stay up and "pillow talk."
- God is my Father. I am His daughter. That means I am of Royal Lineage. Jesus is my Savior. He is my Light. I am and can be because he died for me.
- These are DEFINITELY NOT LISTED IN ORDER OF IMPORTANCE!
- I love my family. I love staying up late playing cards with them or sitting around the dinner table talking. (I was fortunate enough to marry into a wonderful family who is everything a girl could wish for of in-laws. I am so grateful to them for taking me in as one of their own.)
- P.S. Dave & I are both 1 of 8 siblings. So with in-laws . . . Iosepa has 19 aunts and uncles! and counting :)
- I LOVE TEXAS! (South Texas in particular) I love speaking Spanish. I love how affordable the real estate is. I love: the beach, the food, the sunshine, the GRAPEFRUIT, the dances, the culture, the shape of the state - almost everything.
- Finally, I love people. There are few people I have ever really gotten to know who do not have a special place in my heart. Thank you for being a friend. Thank you for being a part of my life. I like to think that I am small pieces of everyone I know.
